An Australian Turning Point

Growing up in Nepal, Sagar Sedhai was always interested in how things worked. As a child, he often imagined how highways, bridges, and buildings were designed and constructed. When the time came to pursue higher education, Sagar and his family saw Australia as the ideal place to continue his studies. At just 18 years old, Sagar relocated to Adelaide, South Australia, embracing both the excitement and challenges of starting over in a new country. While the transition came with its share of adjustments, the support of his brother, sister, and brother-in-law helped him settle into his new life. Like many students beginning university, Sagar’s first choice wasn’t the one he ultimately stayed with. After starting his Bachelor of Computer Science journey at another institution, Sagar realized it wasn’t the right fit for his interests and long-term goals. “I think it is hard to offer your best effort if you don’t appreciate what you are learning.” Sagar reflected.

Rather than continuing down a path that no longer inspired him, Sagar took the opportunity to reassess his future. As he travelled across Australia, he found himself increasingly captivated by the country’s roads, bridges, buildings, and other infrastructure. “I would frequently consider how engineers designed and constructed them. Eventually, I realized that civil engineering was the career I really wanted to pursue because of my curiosity.”

Sagar’s Structural Decision

Sagar’s next challenge was finding an institution that matched his career aspirations. The answer came through a recommendation from his brother who encouraged him to explore EIT after learning about his interests and long-term goals. “I discovered that EIT is an engineering-focused college with campuses in Australia, an industry-oriented curriculum, a practical learning style, and knowledgeable instructors. These attributes were what I was searching for.”

Confident in his decision, Sagar relocated from Adelaide to Perth within a week to begin a new chapter. He enrolled in EIT’s Bachelor of Science (Civil and Structural Engineering) CRICOS Code 095812M) a decision he now considers one of the best he has made. “I now sincerely like my studies, pick up new abilities every day, and am certain that I am laying a solid foundation for my future as a civil engineering technologist.”

Building Confidence at EIT

For Sagar, starting at EIT meant more than changing education providers – it also meant adapting to a new learning environment. “I just finished my first semester at EIT, and I can say that it has been a really enjoyable and educational experience.” What began as a major adjustment soon became a rewarding learning experience. Sagar was able to adjust to his new path and gain confidence as an engineering student through the guidance of his lecturers, the course structure, and the support of the EIT community. One aspect of the program that stood out most to him was EIT’s emphasis on combining theoretical knowledge with practical application. Through assignments, projects, and hands-on activities, he developed a deeper understanding of how engineering concepts translate into real-world practice while strengthening his problem-solving abilities. Beyond the classroom, Sagar also found EIT’s flexible learning resources valuable during his transition. Recorded lectures allowed him to revisit challenging topics, learn at his own pace, and reinforce his understanding as he adjusted to a new education system and field of study.

Semester One Milestones

Sagar also reflected on how studying at EIT introduced him to a different style of learning than he had previously experienced. As he navigated, he developed new study strategies while building the technical knowledge and practical skills needed for a future in civil engineering. “My flexibility, time management, and problem-solving abilities have all increased because of these experiences, and I think these will be helpful in my future work as a civil engineering technologist”. One project that particularly stood out was his Engineering Drawing and CAD assignment, where he created a three-dimensional model of an engineering structure using Autodesk Inventor. For Sagar, the project offered a valuable opportunity to apply classroom concepts to a task that closely reflected real engineering work.

According to him, it strengthened his technical thinking and problem-solving skills while developing professional abilities such as communication, time management, and independent learning. “My first semester at EIT has given me a solid foundation and inspired me to keep acquiring the technical abilities and information required for my future profession as a civil engineering technologist.”

For Sagar, success is not simply about earning a degree – it is about becoming an engineering professional capable of making a meaningful contribution to the environment that first inspired him. As he continues his studies at the Engineering Institute of Technology (EIT), each semester brings him one step closer to turning that ambition into a lifelong career.
