A career built through hands-on problem-solving can become the foundation for something greater. For EIT student Auther Matare, the drive to improve and take on more complex challenges led him to explore the next stage of his engineering journey.

This feature follows Auther’s engineering experience as he continues to expand his knowledge and capabilities through further study. Studying the 52884WA Advanced Diploma of Mechanical Engineering Technology * at the Engineering Institute of Technology (EIT), Auther shares how his learning experience is influencing the way he approaches engineering challenges and his future goals in the industry.

A Foundation in Fabrication

Auther Matare’s engineering journey began with years of hands-on experience in boiler making, where he developed a strong appreciation for practical problem-solving. Working with materials through welding, cutting, and fabrication, Auther enjoys finding solutions to real-world challenges and understanding how things worked in practice. As his experience grew, Auther recognized the importance of developing further technical knowledge to support his career progression and take on more complex responsibilities.

With a strong foundation built through industry experience, he began looking for opportunities to expand his capabilities and explore where further learning could take his career. He set his sights on roles such as mechanical technician, project coordinator, and technical supervisor. To reach that goal, however, Auther knew he needed to upskill. “I felt that I lack engineering knowledge in taking more complex mechanical applications like assessing equipment safety and calculating structure loads,” he said.

Auther’s Decision to Upskill

As Auther looked for ways to expand his engineering capabilities, he researched institutions that could accommodate his work commitments while helping him advance professionally. EIT stood out to him for its flexibility and industry reputation. “It offers flexible online learning that suits my work schedule and has strong recognition in the engineering sector here in Australia.” As he progressed through the program, Auther found that EIT’s practical and work integrated learning approach complemented his engineering work.

Among the learning resources available, the remote labs and recorded lectures proved especially valuable in strengthening his understanding of engineering concepts, where he can run tests on material strength and fluid systems. According to him, these resources helped turn engineering concepts into practical learning experiences.

While these enhanced his studies, balancing them with full-time work required discipline and effective time management. Auther described the journey as both challenging and rewarding. Along the way, he found that the lecturers’ support and practical course content helped him stay engaged throughout his chosen program. More importantly, the knowledge and confidence Auther gained soon began shaping the way he approached engineering challenges at work.

Confidence Beyond Maintenance

With years of experience in maintenance and fabrication, Auther was already familiar with solving practical problems in the field.

Building on that experience, he began applying the engineering knowledge gained through EIT to his work. As a result, he approached challenges with greater confidence and a broader engineering perspective. “EIT shifted my perspective completely. I view myself as a mechanical engineer and I am now solving some problems with confidence,” he said.

That shift in perspective also changed how he contributed to the workplace. Auther added that he now participates more actively in team planning meetings and feels more confident explaining engineering problems and proposing solutions.

Encouraged by this growth, Auther remains focused on continuing his professional growth and exploring the next stages of his engineering journey. He looks ahead with a goal to further develop his leadership capabilities and progress into a mechanical supervisor role.
