Freddie’s journey through the Advanced Diploma of Mechanical Engineering Technology at the Engineering Institute of Technology (EIT) surpassed his initial expectations for online learning.
At first, he questioned whether he had taken on too much, saying, “I wondered if I could handle the rigorous coursework alongside my job and family commitments.” However, once classes began, he found common ground with fellow students, realizing they all faced similar challenges.
Freddie appreciated the practical insights from EIT’s lecturers, stating, “The lecturers’ practical knowledge and ability to relate the modules to real-world experiences were incredibly valuable.”
This connection made the material more relatable and engaging. The flexibility of online learning was a significant advantage, allowing him to manage his time effectively. “I could dedicate extra time to topics that required deeper understanding,” he noted.
However, studying remotely came with its own challenges. Freddie pointed out that the lack of in-person interaction sometimes made it difficult to grasp complex subjects or complete practical assignments.
He explained, “The absence of face-to-face interaction was challenging, especially with topics that might have been easier to address in a physical environment.” Despite these hurdles, he maintained his commitment to education.
Balancing Commitments: Strategies for Success
Balancing work, family, and studying can be tough, but Freddie prioritized self-discipline. He established a structured routine, dedicating time to studying each evening after spending time with his family.
“After work, I spent time with my family, had dinner, and allowed myself a short break for TV or social media,” he explained. This approach helped him maintain a healthy work-life balance.
Support from his wife was crucial; she managed the children’s needs during Freddie’s study time. He acknowledged the sacrifices made, saying, “I missed many of their school and sports events, but this routine helped me stay on track while balancing family and work commitments.”
His effective time management emphasized the importance of discipline in an online learning environment. “Self-discipline was crucial,” he stated, as his organized approach helped him succeed despite the challenges.
Connecting with Instructors and Peers
Despite the challenges of online learning, Freddie recognized the importance of connecting with his instructors and classmates. Weekly webinars allowed him to clarify complex topics and gain insights from his peers.
“Weekly webinars were invaluable for gathering insights and clarifying complex topics,” he recalled.
In addition to webinars, het reached out to his lecturers for further clarification. “When I needed further explanation, I reached out to lecturers via email,” he said.
To foster connections with fellow students, he created a WhatsApp group, which proved to be beneficial. “This collaboration enriched the learning experience by exposing me to perspectives outside my immediate field,” he noted.
His interaction with peers not only enhanced his education but also encouraged discussions linking theory with practice, demonstrating how collaboration can strengthen the online learning experience.
The Real-World Application of Knowledge
Having the opportunity to work for a leading Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC) company allowed him to apply the theoretical knowledge gained from the Advanced Diploma in real-world scenarios.
“Collaborating with registered professional engineers on projects allowed me to propose innovative ideas based on what I learned in the modules,” he explained.
He appreciated being able to bring new concepts into practice, stating, “This often led to ‘thinking outside the box’ and implementing solutions that challenged traditional approaches.”
This connection between his academic learning and workplace experience proved instrumental in developing his engineering skills.
The course structure effectively prepared Freddie to understand the practical aspects of mechanical engineering.
“I’m fortunate to work for a leading EPC company that allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge from the course in real-world scenarios,” he shared.
Preparing for a Progressive Engineering Future
As Freddie contemplates the future, he sees mechanical engineering technology as vital to innovation across various industries, including manufacturing, energy, and infrastructure.
He stated, “Mechanical engineering technology remains a cornerstone of industrial development, supporting everything from manufacturing to renewable energy.”
He believes that his diploma has equipped him well for the evolving engineering landscape in South Africa. “My diploma has equipped me with the skills and knowledge to contribute to these advancements and adapt to the evolving needs of the industry,” he explained.
To remain competitive, Engelbrecht emphasizes the need for continuous learning. “I plan to focus on management and leadership skills to complement my senior position,” he noted.
Additionally, he aims to deepen his understanding of the green hydrogen sector, which he views as a significant opportunity for the future. He remarked, “The intersection of mechanical engineering and renewable energy will undoubtedly shape the future of the industry.”
Reflections on Online Learning in Engineering
Reflecting on his experience, he encourages prospective students to embrace online learning as it presents numerous opportunities.
“Online learning is the way of the future, especially for those unable to commute to traditional institutions,” he stated.
He stresses the importance of creating a dedicated study space and establishing clear study times. “Set up a dedicated study space where you can focus without distractions,” he advised.
Freddie’s story illustrates that with commitment, discipline, and support, online education can be rewarding and transformative. “Consistency and a supportive environment are key to success,” he concluded.
As he moves forward in his career, Freddie said he feels excited about his role in the evolving engineering landscape, empowered by the skills and knowledge gained from EIT.
