Rommel Calindatas, a Switchboard Builder in Western Australia, is proving it’s never too late to chase your dreams. Originally from the Philippines, he’s completing EIT’s 52883WA Advanced Diploma of Applied Electrical Engineering (Electrical Systems) while balancing work and family.
Rommel Topace Calindatas’ journey into engineering began in the Philippines, where he studied electrical engineering technology at the Technological University of the Philippines.
However, after moving to Australia in 2011 as a skilled worker, his career took a different path.
Juggling a demanding job as a Switchboard Builder at APS Group and family responsibilities, he had to put his engineering studies on hold. But his passion for learning never faded.
When he discovered the Engineering Institute of Technology (EIT) and its online programs, he saw an opportunity to reignite his engineering career.
Now, as he nears completion of the 52883WA Advanced Diploma of Applied Electrical Engineering (Electrical Systems), Rommel reflects on his journey, the challenges he’s overcome, and the lessons he’s learned along the way.
What inspired you to pursue this program, and how did your background in Electrical Engineering Technology from the Philippines influence this decision?
“The reason I was inspired to pursue this advanced diploma is the fast innovation of technology nowadays. I need to keep up with these changes to stay relevant in my career. My background in Electrical Engineering Technology in the Philippines gave me a foundation, but I knew I had to learn new things to grow.”
How has your experience been with EIT’s online learning platform, and how do you manage to balance your studies with your job as a Switchboard Builder and family responsibilities?
“Studying while working and taking care of a family is not easy. You need endurance, patience, and proper time management. Sometimes, you have to sacrifice things you enjoy to focus on your goals. EIT’s online platform made it easier for me to balance everything and achieve my dreams.”
What made you choose EIT for your Advanced Diploma, and how has the program helped you reignite your passion for engineering after a long break?
“When I saw the programs EIT offered, I thought, ‘This is my opportunity to advance my career.’ Because of my circumstances, EIT gave me a chance to finish what I started. The program reignited my passion for engineering and helped me stay updated with the latest technologies.”

“The skills I’ve learned at EIT, like testing, troubleshooting, and maintaining electrical equipment, have been directly applicable to my job. These skills have made me more confident and competent in my role as a Switchboard Builder.”
How do you see the skills and knowledge you’re gaining at EIT contributing to your career growth in Australia’s electrical engineering industry?
“The skills and knowledge I’ve gained at EIT are opening new doors for me. They make me more competitive in the job market and give me the confidence to take on more advanced roles in the industry.”
What challenges have you faced as an international student from the Philippines studying and working in Australia, and how have you overcome them?
“Like many international students, I faced challenges like the language barrier, cultural differences, and financial pressures. But these challenges are manageable with perseverance and by seeking help when needed. Adapting to the environment is key.”
How has studying with EIT helped you stay updated with the rapid innovations in electrical engineering and technology?
“Studying with EIT has kept me updated with the latest innovations through their updated materials, modules, and supportive learning officers. It’s been a great way to stay ahead in the field.”
What advice would you give to other working professionals, especially those with busy schedules, who are considering pursuing an online engineering program like EIT’s?
“If you have a passion for engineering but a busy schedule, give EIT’s online program a try. It’s flexible, supportive, and designed to help you achieve your goals without sacrificing your work or family life.”
How do you plan to use your Advanced Diploma qualification to advance your career in electrical engineering, particularly in Australia’s evolving energy and technology sectors?
“I plan to work in the energy sector, particularly in renewable energy, to gain more experience and grow my skills. I also aim to move into project management roles in electrical services and, if possible, pursue further studies in the future.”
Looking back at your journey, what do you consider the most valuable lesson or experience from your time at EIT, and how has it shaped your approach to your career and personal growth?
