Possie Tapkisoleng, a professional from Ok Tedi Mining Limited in Papua New Guinea, recently chatted to us about how his passion for automation and control systems has led him to enhance his education in the field, which he is now applying in his role at a processing plant.

EIT Student’s Commitment to Practical Learning and Growth

Possie’s interest in automation and control systems, particularly PLCs and SCADA, developed during his time working at Ok Tedi Mining Limited’s processing plant.

“My interest grew while working at Ok Tedi Mining Limited Processing Plant where I saw how vital automation is in maintaining efficiency, safety, and productivity,” he shared. “The logic behind PLCs and the visibility offered by SCADA systems fascinated me.”

This curiosity led him to pursue the Professional Certificate of Competency in Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) & SCADA Systems through the Engineering Institute of Technology (EIT). When asked why he chose EIT for his studies, Possie explained, “Because of its practical, industry-focused approach and its flexibility with online learning. The course content was relevant, and that EIT is globally recognized.”

The course, which he completed on 31 May 2025, was a rewarding experience for Possie. “The course was well structured, with a balance of theory and hands-on application,” he said. “This flexibility allowed me to study while working, and the support from instructors and colleagues made the learning journey manageable.”

What inspired your interest in automation and control systems, particularly PLCs and SCADA?

“My interest grew while working at Ok Tedi Mining Limited Processing Plant where I saw how vital automation is in maintaining efficiency, safety, and productivity. The logic behind PLCs and the visibility offered by SCADA systems fascinated me.”

Why did you choose the Engineering Institute of Technology (EIT) for your studies?

“Because of its practical, industry-focused approach and its flexibility with online learning. The course content was relevant, and that EIT is globally recognized.”

How would you describe your experience completing the Professional Certificate of Competency in Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) & SCADA Systems online?

“It was a rewarding experience. The course was well structured, with a balance of theory and hands-on application. This flexibility allowed me to study while working, and the support from instructors and colleagues made the learning journey manageable.”

Were the remote lab sessions effective in helping you develop practical, real-world skills?

“Yes. The remote labs were one of the highlights of the course. They provided access to actual simulation tools and scenarios that helped me a lot. It’s like working with live systems.”

How did you balance your studies with work and other personal commitments during the course?

“There were challenges, but the flexibility of the online setup helped me stay on track without sacrificing work responsibilities or personal time.”

What challenges did you face studying remotely from Papua New Guinea, and how did you overcome them?

“At times, when I couldn’t join live sessions or access materials, I overcame this by downloading resources ahead of time and communicating with the lecturers when I had issues.”

How do you see the skills you’ve gained contributing to engineering projects or industry development in Papua New Guinea?

“These skills are directly relevant to the needs of our industries, especially in processing plant automation. With the knowledge I’ve gained, I can now contribute to efficient system designs, automation upgrades, and maintenance strategies that help the plant’s infrastructures and support developments.”

Was there a particular module or moment during the course that really deepened your understanding; what was it and why?

“Yes, the module on ladder logic programming and fault-finding stood out to me. It helped me understand the decision-making structure within PLCs and how to troubleshoot effectively.”

What advice would you give to other engineers in Papua New Guinea considering an online course with EIT?

“Go for it. EIT offers a high-quality, practical education that’s well-suited for professionals in our country. The knowledge and skills you’ll gain are worth the effort and will open new opportunities for your career.”

Now that you’ve completed the course, what are your next professional goals in the field of automation and control?

“My goal is to apply what I’ve learned to improve automation practices in my current role and take on more responsibilities in system design and integration. I’m also planning to pursue further qualifications in industrial automation to deepen my expertise and eventually contribute to large projects.”
