We often hear stories of Engineering Institute of Technology (EIT) graduates who pursue careers in trend-setting engineering firms after their studies. But what about those who study at EIT and then return as respected lecturers to inspire new generations of engineers? Enter Basanta Giri.
Basanta Giri, a graduate of EIT’s Master of Engineering (Electrical Systems) program, hails from Nepal and joined EIT in 2022.
Over the past two years, he has served as a lecturer at EIT’s campus in Perth. Discover more about his inspiring journey.
What field did you pursue during your time as an EIT student, and what subjects are you now teaching within EIT?
I pursued a Master of Engineering (Electrical Systems) during my time as an EIT student. This semester, I am teaching the BEE106 Fundamentals of Electronics and Electronic Design unit, as well as the BEE204 Electricity Supply Chain unit. These subjects allow me to share my expertise and passion for electrical engineering with the students.
Was becoming a lecturer a lifelong ambition for you, or did it emerge as a passion during your studies?
Becoming a lecturer was a passion that emerged during my earlier experiences of teaching. The joy of helping others understand complex concepts and the fulfillment of seeing students succeed inspired me to pursue a career in academia.
What factors influenced your decision to join EIT as a lecturer, instead of a different university/college?
As a former graduate of EIT, I have a deep connection with the institution. I wanted to give back to the community that supported me during my studies. EIT provides a familiar and supportive environment where I can effectively mentor young engineers and help them navigate their academic and professional journeys.
How do you leverage your experiences as a former EIT student to enhance your teaching approach?
As a former EIT student, I understand the challenges and pressures that students face in their academic journey. This experience allows me to empathize with them and tailor my teaching methods to be more effective and supportive.
How do you intend to foster a supportive and engaging learning environment for your students?
I aim to foster a supportive and engaging learning environment by encouraging open communication, providing timely feedback, and incorporating interactive and hands-on learning activities that make the material more relatable and interesting.
What teaching methodologies or techniques do you find most effective for engineering students?
I find that a combination of project-based learning, problem-solving sessions, and collaborative group work is most effective for engineering students. These methods help them apply theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios, enhancing their understanding and retention.
How do you plan to incorporate real-world industry experiences into your curriculum?
By inviting industry professionals for guest lectures, organizing field trips to relevant industries, and assigning projects that address current industry challenges. Additionally, I use case studies and examples from my own industry experience to make the lessons more practical.
What advice would you give to current EIT students to excel in their studies and prepare for their careers?
My advice to current EIT students is to stay curious and proactive in their learning. Participate actively in class, seek out internships and practical experiences, and build strong foundations in both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Networking with professionals and staying updated with industry trends is also crucial for career success.
What is your favorite aspect of teaching at EIT? Or overall, being a lecturer?
My favorite aspect of teaching at EIT is the opportunity to inspire and mentor the next generation of engineers. Seeing students grasp complex concepts, grow in their confidence, and achieve their goals is incredibly rewarding.
Do you have a favorite moment while teaching?
One of my favorite moments was when a student who had been struggling with a difficult concept in electric power systems finally had a breakthrough. Seeing the joy and sense of accomplishment reminded me of why I chose this profession.
Do you have anything else to share?
I would like to thank EIT for providing such a great opportunity and Professor Dr. Hossein Tafti for supporting me. Their guidance and support have been instrumental in my journey, and I am grateful for the chance to contribute to this esteemed institution.
