Undergraduate Certificate in Mechanical Engineering

Course Overview

UCME

Mechanical engineering is the field of engineering that applies physics and the material sciences to develop machinery. Mechanical engineers use the principles of force, energy, and motion to improve the safety, efficiency, and technological advancement of the world around us. Upon completion of this undergraduate certificate, you will acquire fundamental knowledge, skills, and understanding of the key core units of the mechanical engineering discipline.  You will also demonstrate scientific, mathematical, contextual factors, and design practice knowledge that has been contextualized to engineering applications.

Program Details

Mechanical engineers are responsible for the design, manufacture, and operational processes of anything that moves, from the tiniest, simplest micro-particles to the largest, most complex spacecraft and everything in between. As a mechanical engineer, you have a skill set that is applicable to many industries in the world, including automotive, transport, manufacturing, power generation, medical, consumer goods, and more. Our undergraduate certificate provides you with cutting-edge skills that are valuable in the workplace.

With this qualification, you will have acquired the fundamental knowledge which underpins both this and other fields of engineering.

You must complete 12 credit points comprising four core units. There are no electives in this program. The full-time program duration is six months over 1 semester (or part-time equivalent). For further study, graduates may consider EIT’s Bachelor of Science (Mechanical Engineering).

Unit Code Subjects Credit Points

Potential job roles include engineering and management positions in the following areas of expertise:

  • Mechanical design and manufacturing
  • Material fabrication
  • Mechanical power
  • Thermal power and diesel
  • Mechanical engineering contracts, sales, commissioning and consultation
  • Building systems
  • Industrial operations and maintenance
  • Mechanical project management and business development
  • Automotive engineering
  • Acoustics
  • Fluid mechanics, hydraulics, pumps and piping
  • Lubrication

Our undergraduate certificates take six months to complete full time. Students are expected to spend approximately 10-15 hours per week per unit learning the program material and completing assessments. This includes attending tutorials.

You must submit your application at least one week prior to the start date to be considered for your desired intake.

A census date is the date at which an enrolment is considered to be final. Any withdrawal you make after the study period census date will incur an academic penalty (for example, a fail grade) and a financial penalty (for example, no refund of your student contribution or tuition fees). See our current census dates.

Any student has a right to appeal a decision of the Engineering Institute of Technology (EIT) or any member of the institute’s staff. EIT has a comprehensive Policy on Appeals and Grievances to assist students.

Hear from our students

The delivery methodology and the information available in the e-library can’t be beaten. The other important aspect of online education is recorded lectures. You can review the tutorial and lessons on repeat when you need to understand the concept.
M Masemola, South Africa
What I liked most about the course and EIT is the flexibility is offered regarding education. It gave me the opportunity to study and work full-time.
C Groenewald, South Africa
I enjoyed interacting with students all around the world, and seeing how the principles I have learned applies to them as well.
S Zeelie, South Africa
My line of work requires me travel quite often. I could not attend every class due to my remote locations, but still I could recap and stay on top of the study material thanks to the recordings. Also, all the Instructors were world class.
