This course is focused on the skills needed to select construction materials suitable for different applications, such as buildings, bridges, roads, and tunnels among other civil construction projects. The course structure is unique and designed to equip students with knowledge of conventional and emerging construction materials, covering materials characterization, quality control and standards.

Worldwide, the civil construction sector plays an important role in the global economy via infrastructure and building projects. The construction engineering industry seeks qualified professionals capable to understand materials performance and its quality control commonly employed in civil engineering and construction (aggregate, steel, timber, bitumen, asphalt, and concrete).

This course aims to empower construction engineering professionals with the capability to combine skills from construction materials behaviour and application in infrastructure and building projects.

Graduates of the Advanced Diploma of Civil and Structural Engineering (Materials Testing) will be able to: 

  • Analyse specified project requirements using appropriate mathematics and physics computations 
  • Identify relevant properties of key aspects in the physical environment and in materials associated with projects 
  • Analyse, diagnose, plan, design and execute solutions with respect to testing and application of materials in bitumen and asphalt, pavements, and in structures constructed with timber, steel, and reinforced concrete 
  • Apply effective materials testing techniques to civil and structural projects 
  • Evaluate typical contemporary issues concerning materials testing in civil and structural engineering 
  • Formulate engineering solutions to typical scenarios related to materials used in civil and structural engineering 
  • Implement and utilise engineering solutions to diverse fields in any organisation 
  • Prepare and explain complex technical information and concepts to plan, communicate and implement solutions to a range of engineering environments and contexts 
  • Manage complex projects on time and within budget 
  • Manage self-autonomy within an organisation, to achieve objectives that have outputs based on engineering applications. 

Student applications are considered on a case-by-case basis and the following minimum entry requirements are to be strictly adhered to: 

  • Applicants must have at least an Australian Year 12 or Cert III trade qualification (or equivalent) in a related field;  

AND 

  • They must have at least 2 years’ work experience in a related field 

OR

  • At least 4 years’ work experience in a related field – subject to acceptance of an application for Credit to Entry ** 

AND 

  • Satisfactory English language proficiency at an English pass level in an Australian Senior Certificate of Education (or equivalent); OR 
  • A specified level of achievement in a recognised English language test such as IELTS (or equivalent) at a score of at least 5.5 (with no individual band score less than 5.0), or equivalent; OR 
  • Satisfactory completion of another course offered by EIT, or by another tertiary institution, in English.

The program leader for this program is Dr. Ana Evangelista.

You are expected to spend approximately 10-15 hours per week learning the program material and completing assessments. This includes attending weekly webinars that run for about 90 minutes to facilitate class discussion and allow you to ask questions. This program is run online on a part-time basis and has been designed to fit around full-time work. It will take 24 months to complete.
