Mastering Power System Protection: Principles and Design Techniques
Join Professor Jerry Walker, for a comprehensive two-day workshop.
Book before 12 May 2025 to take advantage of the early bird discount! Additionally, you will be entitled to a 25% returning student discount to one of EIT’s Professional Certificate of Competency Courses.
Attendees will be able to claim CPD points for this workshop.
Workshop Overview:
Delegates will explore the fundamental principles and components of power system protection. Topics include the need for protection, fault types and their effects, and methods for calculating short-circuit currents.
You’ll delve into system earthing, fuses, relays, and instrument transformers, gaining insights into their roles in ensuring system stability. Advanced concepts like time grading coordination, unit protection, and specific protection schemes for transformers, busbars, motors, and generators will also be covered, equipping you with a comprehensive understanding of protection strategies.
Workshop Outline:
The course provides you with an opportunity to understand Electrical Power System Protection dynamics.
- You will gain an understanding of the principles and design techniques necessary to select and apply overcurrent, differential relays to the protection of lines, busbars, cables, transformers and generators.
- Understand the capabilities of electro-mechanical, numerical protection and that electrical network integrity depends on a well-conceived and correctly implemented protection philosophy that satisfies the conflicting requirements of dependability and security of speed.
- How numerical or micro-processor based relaying schemes operate, their advantages and disadvantages compared with electro-mechanical relaying schemes and why today’s numerical protection unit is not just a relay but a multi-function protection control and monitoring system.
- Expose the delegates to the practical calculation procedures for fault currents and relay settings.
Who Should Attend:
- Engineers Technologists and Technicians in Planning, Plant, Project and Design Environments for both Power systems, Instrumentation & Control
- Maintenance and Consulting Engineers
- Project and Engineering Managers
- Safety Professionals
- Design Draughtsman
- Field & Service Technicians and Electricians
- Engineers, Technologists and Technicians in Training
About the Presenter:
Professor Jerry Walker, Managing Director of KEI CONSULTING (PTY) LTD and Director of WALMET CONSULTANCY (PTY) LTD
Jerry is one of those rare engineers who has worked all the way up from ‘the tools’ as an electrical Millwright to achieving a Doctorate in High Voltage Engineering and Diagnostics of Electrical Cable Insulation. He commenced his career working on the Hot Strip Mill in a steel plant, on maintenance of protection systems and Variable Speed Drive, for 10 years. He then spent 9 years in the oil and gas industry where he was involved in the commissioning and maintenance of the complete spectrum of Power Electronic and Power Engineering equipment.
He has devoted the past fourteen years to a combination of research/ consulting and lecturing, focusing on Power Distribution, Power System Protection and High Voltage Engineering. One of his major successes in the past year has been in designing a complete high voltage laboratory for the engineering school of a prominent university where he now works as a Consulting Professor in the Institute for High Voltage Studies.
Jerry is a particularly entertaining instructor with a host of experiences in, and a tremendous passion for the topic of Earthing, Bonding, Lightning and Surge Protection.
