Dr. Steve Mackay is the founder of the Engineering Institute of Technology. He firmly believes in Nelson Mandela’s mantra that, “Education is the most powerful weapon which we can use to change the world.” His leadership has inspired EIT’s unique and distinctive approach to engineering education.

Since 2008 three core objectives define the essence of the institute:

Collaborating comprehensively with industry to ensure graduates are job-ready.
Employing platforms of learning to facilitate student accessibility and engagement.
Keeping the business of education student-centric.

Dr. Mackay has enjoyed a varied career in engineering, having worked in automation, data acquisition, instrumentation, data communications, and process control throughout Australia, Europe, Africa, and North America over the past 35 years. He has successfully pioneered the application of new technologies in Australia and overseas, installing industrial data communication systems and implementing live online education, (including remote laboratories), for engineering students worldwide. Dr. Mackay has been involved in a range of industries, including power stations, mining, mineral processing, oil/gas/petrochemical plants, and platforms. He has presented courses on industrial data communications, data acquisition, instrumentation, and process control to over 30,000 engineers and technicians worldwide for clients such as NASA, Rolls Royce, and BP. He has also co-authored and edited 25 engineering books that have been published across the world. Dr. Mackay is a Fellow of Engineers Australia with a license to practice as a Chemical, Mechanical, and Electrical Chartered Professional Engineer. As Dean of the Engineering Institute of Technology, Dr. Mackay leads the institute in providing microcredentials and engineering qualifications to over 2000 students per year from 140 countries. He has an unswerving focus on student outcomes and on excellence in education.

TESLA – Then and Now

December 13, 2016 3:21 pm
By Edwina Ross “The scientists of today think deeply instead of clearly. One must be sane to think clearly, but one can think deeply and be quite insane.” These are the words of Nikola Tesla (1856 – 1943) physicist, engineer and inventor. Elon Musk, another scientist, engineer and inventor,...Read More

The Skills Engineers Did Not Know They Needed

December 13, 2016 3:20 pm
Could you visualise a world without technical drawing software? Showing the inner workings of something you engineered by hand sketching the details as accurately as possible. CAD software is the lifeblood of design engineers. Most modern engineers applying for patents for their tirelessly engineered innovations use CAD programs to create...Read More

Engineering Ethics

December 13, 2016 3:18 pm
W. Richard Bowen, author of Engineering Ethics: Challenges and Opportunities, says that engineers are in charge of several industrial operations that have the power to change the society they live in. He lists some of the ingenuities that engineers have designed: “Clean water production and sanitation, energy generation, large-scale pharmaceutical...Read More

Engineering Robots to Pick Your Strawberries

December 13, 2016 3:04 pm
Over 30 years ago, I attended an impressive demonstration of a company that had developed a nifty image processing system and fruit selector to sort good from bad fruit. A great idea but hugely expensive, only operational for a part of the season (fruit picking) and prone to breakdowns and...Read More

Safety Engineering in Focus After Worrying Failures

December 13, 2016 1:59 pm
When the United Kingdom famously opted to exit from the European Union this year, what was the dominant feeling among them? The question sounds like the unanswerable million dollar question at the end of a trivia show. The answer is: uncertainty. They felt that the country had isolated itself...Read More

Getting Technical about Writing in Engineering

December 13, 2016 1:55 pm
Engineers are synonymous with having unbridled amounts of knowledge. Some might say they have a wealth of knowledge. They have to publish their thoughts and work into books, journals, magazines and the like, in a bid to inform and instruct others. However, a stereotype that is furthered by non-engineers is...Read More

Are Older Engineers Being Discriminated Against?

December 13, 2016 1:51 pm
Globally, there will be two billion people aged over 60 years old and older, by 2050. That figure is given to us by the United States government, who use the estimations to build policy around the elderly in their country. How many of these two billion will still be employed...Read More

The Master’s Degree is the New Black

December 13, 2016 1:48 pm
The Master’s degree is the new black. It’s becoming awfully fashionable in a world where a Bachelor’s degree is becoming more accessible than ever, and therefore, more redundant. When fighting for lower tuition fees, students from around the world always reference the progressive thinking Germany (and surrounding European countries), who...Read More
