A mine may begin with what lies beneath the ground. Its impact, however, can stretch far beyond it. Across the African continent, growing mineral demand is driving investment in ports, rail corridors, power networks, and other essential infrastructure. The scale of these changes, however, raises a bigger question about where Africa’s mining growth could lead next.
This feature takes a closer look at what this growth could unlock, and the engineering questions emerging along the way.
A New Mineral Rush
The minerals behind today’s energy and technology shift are becoming increasingly valuable.
According to the International Energy Agency’s Global Critical Minerals Outlook 2026, the demand for key energy minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, graphite, manganese, and rare earth elements such as neodymium and dysprosium has increased by close to 10% a year on average in recent years. In simple terms, these minerals are becoming much more in demand than other metals, which have grown by around 1% a year.
This is also bringing Africa’s mineral resources into sharper focus. According to IEA, the intergovernmental organization focused on energy security and energy policy, the African continent holds significant reserves of several critical minerals, including cobalt, graphite, and manganese.
These resources are already contributing to global mineral supply, with Africa emerging as a major producer of several critical minerals. The Democratic Republic of Congo, for example, was accounted for around 70% of global mined cobalt production in 2024. With this position in global mineral supply, Africa is creating opportunities to look beyond extraction and towards the wider industries that mining can support.
Africa’s Mining Surge
Africa’s role in the global mineral market is attracting greater attention to the development of its mining sector.
According to Mining Weekly, this is reflected in a growing range of mining activities across countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Mozambique, Malawi, and South Africa. These are also strengthening connections between mines, ports, and regional markets. Major logistics corridors are helping to make these connections more efficient, such as the Lobito Corridor in Angola, the Northern Corridor in East Africa, and the Nacala Corridor linking Mozambique with Malawi and Zambia.
These corridors are not only transporting the movement of minerals.
They are also creating opportunities for wider economic activity across Africa’s mining sector. Mining Weekly notes that improved transport links and greater investment in power infrastructure can support industrial growth, create jobs, and generate value for communities. It means that Africa could capture more of the value generated by its mineral resources by expanding into processing, refining, and manufacturing.
For engineering professionals, the opportunity extends well beyond the mines themselves. This growth will create new demands that require experts to think beyond individual projects and consider how entire systems work together.
Scaling up Engineering Capabilities
Mining Weekly and the International Energy Agency identify several areas that will be critical as Africa’s mining sector expands:
- Powering Mining Operations – As mines and processing facilities become more energy-intensive, reliable electricity will become increasingly important. Engineering professionals will need to design and strengthen power systems that connect operations to generation.
- Connecting Mining Regions – Many mineral deposits are located far from ports, cities, and processing centers, making efficient transport a major consideration. Engineering professionals will need to design and improve rail and road networks that can handle heavy mineral freight across long distances while remaining reliable in demanding environments.
- Developing Processing Capacity – Expanding beyond the export of raw minerals will require more processing and refining facilities closer to where resources are extracted. Engineering professionals will need to maintain these facilities while integrating the power, equipment, and control systems they depend on.
- Building Technical Expertise – As mining operations become more sophisticated, specialized knowledge will be needed to manage the technologies and facilities behind them. Engineering professionals will need practical expertise across equipment, control systems, processing technologies, and industrial operations.
The value of a practical and work-integrated engineering education becomes clear as these demands continue to grow.
