SUMMARY:The Challenge of Water Security in Arid Economies
DESCRIPTION:The live presentation of this event has already taken place. \nPlease view the PDF slides here or watch the video recording below: \nWebinar details\nAs the global population grows\, the world is increasingly constrained by water stress. In arid economies this poses a unique set of challenges that require the ability to integrate different skills into high impact teams. In the case of Australia\, a major contributor to the economy is mining. This suggests that growing demands will be made on the Social License to Operate\, which will directly impact the investor confidence needed to sustain economic growth. \nThis webinar provides insight into a conceptual model of water as a changing risk over time. It defines threshold events typically associated with transition from one phase of development to another. Central to this is the need to deal with the cumulative impact of past engineering interventions\, which introduces the notion of non-linearity into the process. It also proposes a new paradigm capable of integrating a broader range of skill sets into technical teams by aligning their output with strategic interests such as investment risk. \n\nThe webinar will be recorded and will be sent out to registered attendees afterwards.\nA certificate of attendance will be provided to attendees who request one near the end of the live webinar session.\nPlease note: the time stated on this event is in UTC. You will need to convert this to your own time zone.\n\nKey takeaways from this webinar\n\nUnderstanding what water security means for arid economies.\nLearning how to manage aridity from an engineering perspective.\nLinking these activities to the capacity for economic growth despite growing water constraints.\n\nRelated courses\nThis webinar/topic is multidisciplinary and relates to the following schools of engineering: \n\nCivil Engineering\nIndustrial Automation\, Instrumentation and Process Control\nData Comms & Industrial IT\n\nAbout the presenter\n \nDr. Anthony Turton\, EIT lecturer and Head of Strategy Nexus Resilience \nDr. Anthony Turton completed his PhD on water as a national security risk\, focusing on contested shared rivers. His work was classified at the time and involved professional engagement with various governments worldwide where water was a national security issue. He later transitioned from the classified environment and became a Fellow at the CSIR. In that role\, he was appointed Vice Chairman of the Research Advisory Panel (RAP)\, the highest organ in the CSIR responsible for the parliamentary grant allocation to the national water strategy. Part of his core responsibility at the CSIR was serving as a media spokesperson for water\, which significantly raised his profile. He also served as Deputy Governor on the World Water Council and continues to work as an editor for their official journal\, Water Policy. He was the Executive Director of the International Water Resource Association (IWRA) and later became Deputy President. He also became a founding member of the Universities Partnership for Transboundary Water. In these roles\, he gained considerable experience working in transdisciplinary teams that included process engineers\, mining engineers\, environmental scientists\, and geohydrologists. \nAfter leaving the CSIR\, Dr. Turton was appointed as a Professor at the Center for Environmental Management at the University of the Free State. He began working on water as a risk and opportunity for mining companies. In that role\, he was appointed as an advisor to the Chairman of the Board and/or CEO of two Australian-listed mining companies operating in South Africa. One was a gold tailing recovery process\, and the other was a major open-cast metallurgical coal mining operation. He has worked with various governments in an advisory role\, including those of the Nile\, Mekong\, Helmand\, and Jordan Rivers. On the commercial side\, he has worked as a consultant to the financial services industry\, including institutional investment fund managers\, focusing on water as a risk to their portfolios. One of his last professional assignments before immigrating was as an advisor to various litigators involving the collapse of water and sewage services in South Africa. His work in Australia has included serving as an external reviewer for Vic Water in Melbourne and the Burdekin River Forum in Queensland.

SUMMARY:Six Easy Pieces of Physics As Applied to Engineering
DESCRIPTION:The live presentation of this event has already taken place. \nPlease view the PDF slides here or watch the video recording below: \nWebinar details\nThis webinar offers a rare chance to explore six of the most fascinating topics from The Feynman Lectures on Physics in a simplified\, engaging format without requiring a formal mathematics background. Whether you’re a seasoned enthusiast or new to physics\, this session provides an accessible and enriching experience. \nThis is taken from the book Six Easy Pieces Essentials of Physics by Richard P. Feynman: Explained by its most Brilliant Teacher. \nThere are six sections; \n\nAtoms in Motion\nBasic Physics\nRelation of Physics to other Sciences\nConservation of Energy\nThe Theory of Gravitation\nQuantum Behaviour\n\nFive compelling reasons why you should attend this: \n\nUnderstand the Movement of Atoms and Its Impact on Everyday Life\nThe first section\, Atoms in Motion\, delves into the fundamental building blocks of matter and how their motion shapes everything we see and experience. This foundational concept is not only fascinating but also explains real-world phenomena in a way that’s easy to grasp for a general audience.\nExplore Conservation of Energy in Action\nThe Conservation of Energy section breaks down this cornerstone of physics\, showing how energy is never lost but transforms from one form to another. Understanding this principle helps in interpreting everything from mechanical systems to renewable energy technologies\, making it practical and relevant.\nDemystify Quantum Behavior Without Complex Math\nThe Quantum Behavior section introduces one of the most perplexing and revolutionary ideas in modern science. By attending\, you’ll gain an accessible understanding of concepts like wave-particle duality and uncertainty\, which underpin technologies like semiconductors\, lasers\, and quantum computing—presented in a way anyone can comprehend.\nThese materials not only showcase the beauty of physics but also connect them to everyday applications and groundbreaking technologies\, ensuring an engaging and enlightening experience.\nEngage in Interactive Learning\nUnlike passive lectures\, this webinar incorporates hands-on demonstrations using Python code. Participants can interact with physics concepts in real-time\, fostering deeper understanding and offering practical skills that can be applied beyond the session.\nBroaden Your Horizons Beyond Science\nRichard Feynman’s multidisciplinary approach—spanning science\, problem-solving\, art\, and even music—is an inspiring reminder of the interconnectedness of knowledge. This webinar doesn’t just teach physics; it offers a philosophy of curiosity and innovation that can energize personal and professional growth.\n\nRichard Feynman was one of the most famous and beloved but riveting physicists of the 20th century. He was Professor of Theoretical Physics at the California Institute of Technology and was awarded the Nobel Prize for his work in quantum field theory. Steve Mackay\, the presenter\, really enjoyed reading (some of) his incredible volume of writings and attending his lectures online. A practical person – he chaired the Challenger Rocket disaster and gave a simple and practical explanation of what caused the crash. He was also a repairer of radios\, a picker of locks\, an artist\, a dancer\, a bongo player and a decipherer of Mayan hieroglyphics. \nThis will be presented in one hour and you will have the opportunity to demonstrate some of the concepts with Python code online. \n\nThe webinar will be recorded and will be sent out to registered attendees afterwards.\nA certificate of attendance will be provided to attendees who request one near the end of the live webinar session.\nPlease note: the time stated on this event is in UTC. You will need to convert this to your own time zone.\n\nKey takeaways from this webinar\n\nA Unique Perspective on Physics\nExplore six fundamental topics from The Feynman Lectures on Physics\, including atoms in motion\, basic physics\, and quantum behavior\, presented in an accessible\, mathematics-free format for a general audience.\nRichard Feynman’s Legacy\nGain insights into the life and contributions of Nobel Laureate Richard Feynman\, a legendary physicist known for his groundbreaking work in quantum field theory\, practical problem-solving\, and multidisciplinary interests.\nInteractive Learning with Python\nParticipate in a hands-on opportunity to demonstrate key physics concepts using Python code\, making the session both engaging and practically applicable.\n\nRelated courses\nThis multi-disciplinary webinar/topic relates to our schools of: \n\nMechanical Engineering\nElectrical Engineering\nIndustrial Automation\, Instrumentation and Process Control\nCivil Engineering\n\nTo learn more about tuition fees\, please click here. \nAbout the presenter\n \nSteve Mackay\, EIT’s Dean of Engineering \nDr. Mackay has enjoyed a varied career in engineering\, having worked in automation\, data acquisition\, instrumentation\, data communications\, and process control throughout Australia\, Europe\, Africa\, and North America over the past 35 years.
