Prior to his academic career\, he spent three years working in the industry\, and even while pursuing teaching and research\, he maintained strong ties with the industrial sector\, successfully completing multiple collaborative projects. \nVishal’s research primarily focuses on Advanced Manufacturing\, resulting in the publication of 108 scientific articles. His work has garnered over 3\,600 citations\, establishing an impressive H-index of 34 on Scopus. His expertise has been acknowledged globally\, as he was recognized among the top 2% researchers worldwide\, according to a study conducted by Stanford University. Furthermore\, Vishal has demonstrated his leadership abilities by organizing seven international conferences\, editing special journal issues\, and publishing three books in collaboration with Springer publishers. \nAs a sought-after supervisor\, Vishal has successfully guided thirteen PhD and 28 Masters students in their research journeys\, fostering their academic growth. He has also forged productive collaborations with international faculty members and industry partners\, further enriching his contributions to the field. Additionally\, Vishal has served as an Associate Editor for esteemed journals such as the Journal of Intelligent Manufacturing\, Alexandria Engineering Journal\, and International Journal of Mechatronics and Manufacturing Systems\, further highlighting his influential contributions in academia.

His research interest includes the grid integration of renewable energy sources\, in particular\, photovoltaics and energy storage and the design and control of multilevel power converters. \n \nDr. Munira Batool\, Unit Coordinator\,  Postgraduate Supervisor & EIT Lecturer \nDr. Munira Batool is an Online Lecturer\, Unit Coordinator and Postgraduate Research Supervisor in Electrical Engineering Department. She graduated with a PhD degree from Curtin University in May 2019. \nShe has over 13 years of extensive experience of teaching and research in the university sector. She is currently working as Assistant Professor in University of Engineering and Technology\, Taxila Pakistan. She has commendable teaching experiences in Power System Generation\, Power System Transmission\, Power System Distribution and Utilization\, Power System Protection and Electric Power System Analysis. Her research interests include Distributed Energy Generation based Power systems\, renewable energy sources integration and control\, microgrids and smart grid. Initially\, this was applied to improve the performance of Distributed Energy Generation systems using optimization methods. More recently\, her research efforts have involved the optimal sizing and siting of renewable energy sources (like PV and Wind etc.) in distribution networks using novel Power Electronic converters and controllers. She is a subject matter expertise on modelling and simulating renewable energy based power system networks using software commonly used in the industry. The results of her research have been published in high ranked journal and conference papers.

SUMMARY:Predicting and Preventing Malfunctions: A Revolutionary Approach to Condition-Based Asset Performance Management (APM)

Asset failures in solar and wind farms can bring down a whole network of infrastructure\, affecting thousands of customers and decreasing network reliability\, costing hundreds of thousands of dollars. Therefore\, there is a strong imperative to predict and avoid malfunctions in such highly connected systems. Sophisticated reliability models using new Machine Leaning (ML) techniques are proving to be a game-changer for asset performance management. Data and artificial intelligence are being used to predict malfunctions at any future point in time and facilitate the shift to condition than time-based maintenance. Early detection and more precise information can indicate which components or equipment will need to be repaired or replaced and when. This is allowing asset managers to plan maintenance efficiently and avoid unplanned and expensive disruptions. \nIn this webinar\, we outline how machine learning (ML)\, combined with industry expertise\, can estimate the probability of failure for specific failure modes and components. The methodology illustrates a specific failure mode using a large wind farm case study\, where a significant number of component failures occurred within a short space of time. The problem is solved using a two-step solution\, firstly predicting the future probability distribution of a parameter given its current value\, and secondly\, determining the probability of the malfunction given the predicted parameter value. SUMMARY:Large-Scale Evaluation of Existing Reinforced Concrete Buildings for Seismic Retrofit
DESCRIPTION:The live presentation of this event has already taken place. \nPlease view the presentation here or watch the video recording below:\n \nWebinar details\nThis study presents an alternative approach to the assessment of earthquake resistance of existing buildings and evaluation of the seismic requirement for a retrofitting process. In order to avoid the assessment of individual components of a building\, we propose evaluating it as a whole object using the nonlinear static pushover analysis. In this procedure\, the elements’ failure appears in the changes of stiffness at every pushover increment and accumulates until the total failure of a whole structure. Earthquake resistance of the building is quantified as a ratio between the total energy that the existing structure can absorb to the energy at its ideal (upgraded) state that can be estimated using the capacity curves obtained by the pushover analysis. His research interests encompass the grid integration of renewable energy sources\, specifically photovoltaics and energy storage\, as well as the design and control of multilevel power converters.

Prior to his academic career\, he spent three years working in the industry\, and even while pursuing teaching and research\, he maintained strong ties with the industrial sector\, successfully completing multiple collaborative projects. \nVishal’s research primarily focuses on Advanced Manufacturing\, resulting in the publication of 108 scientific articles. His work has garnered over 3\,600 citations\, establishing an impressive H-index of 34 on Scopus. His expertise has been acknowledged globally\, as he was recognized among the top 2% researchers worldwide\, according to a study conducted by Stanford University. In industrial environments\, data communication also plays a central role. It allows computers\, controllers\, sensors\, actuators\, and other devices to communicate together in order to control processes. Data communication is an enabler for data acquisition\, remote control\, and automation. \nIndustrial data communication requirements include short delays\, determinism\, and real-time operations. He earned his MSc in 2001 and PhD in 2004 both in computer science from the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées INSA Lyon France\, and the Ecole Centrale de Lyon France\, respectively. In 2004 he joined Centrale Lyon Innovation SA as a research engineer. In 2006 he founded and managed Ghanni\, a company specialised in multimedia content recommendation and identification. Several European radio stations and websites licensed Ghanni’s music recommendation technology. In 2015 he restructured Ghanni to transform it into a consultancy company in the domain of Artificial Intelligence and joined the Engineering Institute of Technology\, Australia\, as a lecturer. His current research interests are in the use of Artificial Intelligence techniques to solve industrial problems.
