SUMMARY:Gas Turbines - What Does the Future Hold?
DESCRIPTION:The live presentation of this event has already taken place. To download the recording and presentation slides\, please complete the form below.\n \nPlease join Dr. Lucas Skoufa\, EIT Lecturer and Specialist Turbine and Steam Engineer\, to gain a historical overview of the gas turbine engine\, main applications\, and future use. \nThe development of the gas turbine engine can be traced back over 100 years. For instance\, 1903 was the first use of a gas turbine for generating power. In 1941\, the first successful flight of the Whittle jet engine occurred. Since then\, the gas turbine has been the primary power plant for commercial and military aircraft. Other applications for gas turbines include power generation\, mechanical drive applications\, and propulsion plants for naval vessels. The gas turbine has advantages such as a high power output to weight ratio and short start-up time. On the other hand\, the gas turbine consumes a lot of air. \nIn recent times\, the issue of climate change and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions has impacted the operations of gas turbine power plants in Australian electricity markets. The use of natural gas as a fuel is being challenged\, and hydrogen has been purported as a fuel for gas turbines since its carbon dioxide emissions are virtually nil. Even in the aviation sector\, electric propulsion plants are being developed. This webinar will provide a historical overview of the gas turbine\, its main applications until now\, and provide a look at the current efforts to ensure the gas turbine remains a viable propulsion and power plant. \nJoin us to learn more at this must-attend event for engineering professionals and aspiring engineers alike. \nReserve your spot at this free webinar today! \nThe webinar will be recorded and will be sent out to registered attendees afterwards. \nA certificate of attendance will be provided to attendees who request one near the end of the live webinar session. \nPlease note: the time stated on this event is in Australian Western Standard Time (AWST). SUMMARY:Feasibility of Converting Overhead Transmission Lines to Underground – A Case Study
DESCRIPTION:The live presentation of this event has already taken place. To download the recording and presentation slides\, please complete the form below.\n \nPlease join Professor Akhtar Kalam\, EIT Academic Board Chairman\, to gain an insight into an Australian case study on converting overhead transmission lines to underground. \nThis webinar will present on various aspects of the 220 kilovolt (kV) transmission lines crossing the Waverley Park estate in Mulgrave\, Victoria. It will evaluate the feasibility of diverting the transmission lines underground. The developer of Waverley Park estate had originally intended to underground the transmission lines by means of a transition enclosure constructed at each end of the estate\, and approximately 530 meters of buried cable between the two locations. However\, the builder’s proposal was abandoned\, and the slightly realigned transmission lines were retained above ground. Included in the formal reasons for abandoning the company’s original underground proposal were visual amenity\, open space\, and financial cost concerns. \nThe presentation will identify an alternative\, preferred undergrounding solution compared to the original proposal advanced by the builder. Although broadly the same as the builder’s initially proposed concept\, the alternative solution is modeled on the 220 kV Brownhill Road substation located in Auckland\, New Zealand. From a public amenities’ perspective\, the Brownhill Road scenario is similar to that existing on the Waverley Park estate but is demonstrably superior in terms of visual amenity\, open space\, and financial cost. SUMMARY:Recent Trends in Evaluation and Monitoring of Existing Concrete Structures
DESCRIPTION:The live presentation of this event has already taken place. To download the recording and presentation slides\, please complete the form below.\n \nPlease join Dr. Ana Evangelista\, EIT Civil & Structural Engineering Course Coordinator and Lecturer\, to learn more about different methods and techniques used to evaluate concrete properties. \nConcrete is the most widely consumed civil construction material in terms of its versatility\, strength\, and durability among other benefits. As a result\, concrete is used in almost every type of construction\, including homes\, buildings\, roads\, bridges\, airports\, and tunnels. However\, over time concrete presents signs of deterioration as it exceeds its original design life. Consequently\, the existing infrastructure typically degrades over time whilst it is subjected to larger loads than it was initially intended for. \nHistorically there have been countless buildings\, bridges\, and other structural elements that have collapsed due to various causes such as corrosion\, unpredicted loads\, or natural disasters. Usually\, the first approach to mitigate structural failure includes periodic visual inspections as part of the maintenance schedule. Additionally\, there are different methods to evaluate and monitor existing structures. For example\, non-destructive testing\, evaluation techniques and Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) technologies are important resources for assessing concrete quality\, integrity\, and performance in situ. \nThe construction engineering industry is a leader in new technologies and research that is focused on structural behavior monitoring. This webinar aims to discuss the technologies that can support engineers\, architects\, and construction professionals seeking up-to-date information to evaluate the condition of concrete in deep foundations\, bridges\, buildings\, pavements\, dams\, and other concrete construction. \nDr. Ana Evangelista has been investigating different methods and techniques used to evaluate concrete properties. \nJoin us to learn more at this must-attend event for engineering professionals and aspiring engineers alike. \nReserve your spot at this free webinar today! \nThe webinar will be recorded and will be sent out to registered attendees afterward. \nA certificate of attendance will be provided to attendees who request one near the end of the live webinar session. \nPlease note: the time stated on this event is in Australian Western Standard Time (AWST). SUMMARY:Data Communication - The Backbone of Industrial Automation
DESCRIPTION:The live presentation of this event has already taken place. To download the recording and presentation slides\, please complete the form below.\n \nPlease join Dr. Imtiaz Madni\, EIT Lecturer\, to gain an overview of the significant field of industrial data communications and its key factors. \nIndustrial data communication is characterized by its operating environment. Electromagnetic interference (EMI)\, long distances and physical barriers set industrial communications apart from typical business office requirements. Conventional equipment usually lacks the versatility to adapt to the unique requirements of data monitoring and process control. With so many different standards in practice today\, the debate is not about what is the best (for example: Foundation Fieldbus\, Profibus\, Devicenet or Industrial Ethernet)\, but rather about selecting the most appropriate technologies and standards for a given application and then ensuring that best practice is followed in designing\, installing and commissioning the data communications links to ensure they run fault-free. \nDuring this webinar\, we will discuss the basics of industrial data communication and networking\, including OSI model and TCP/IP based networks and where to safely use an industrial web intranet. SUMMARY:Applying Guerrilla Tactics in Executing Outstanding Engineering Projects
DESCRIPTION:The live presentation of this event has already taken place. To download the recording and presentation slides\, please complete the form below.\n \nPlease join Dr. Steve Mackay\, EIT Founder and Dean of Engineering\, to gain an insight into guerrilla project management tools and the successful use of these in real engineering projects. \nSome of you may have been trained in project management techniques (e.g. using the acclaimed PMBOK)\, which can work. In using Guerrilla tactics\, you can seriously enhance your classical project management techniques and achieve incredible outcomes in your next project. The world is a considerably more uncertain place\, and flexibility and adaptability are becoming key elements in managing any project. \nThis presentation will give you these guerrilla tools – in which to really nail your next engineering project into the extreme success category! Real life examples of engineering projects where these tools have been successfully applied will be demonstrated. \nGuerrillas operate with minimal (and often inferior) resources and are incredibly flexible. This means operating at a low cost with minimal overheads\, being extremely action oriented and very elastic. This is the essence of great project management. \nThe challenge when you are running a project is that you establish controls\, build in a hierarchy of managers and established ways of doing things. This can be dangerous as it runs counter-intuitively to individual’s initiatives which is the driver of guerrilla project management. \nA few obvious examples are to avoid fixed assets; subcontract out where possible. Battlefield communications need to be responsive as you need accurate information and the ability to communicate quickly and effectively with all staff. Especially between staff working in the field to the top level managers. Show your troops the way – ensure your commanders are always in the heat of the battle – to ensure all your key project managers are in the field encountering the real problems occurring. \nGive your troops in the field responsibility and measure them immediately on their successes. Avoid multi-layered chains of command as this bogs a good project down. SUMMARY:What if Leonardo da Vinci used CAD Software?
DESCRIPTION:The live presentation of this event has already taken place. To download the recording and presentation slides\, please complete the form below.\n \nJoin Dr. Arti Siddhpura\, one of EIT’s Mechanical Engineering Lecturers\, to find out what would have happened if Leonardo da Vinci used CAD Software. \nThe Mona Lisa\, The Last Supper\, the first flying machine\, parachute\, and machine-gun – the list of Leonardo da Vinci’s achievements could go on and on. But there are several of his brilliant ideas that are still on the paper and never made it to this list of achievements. \nOne of the most remarkable facets of da Vinci was his ability to make a connection between multiple disciplines – combining Science with Art\, Humanities and Technologies. He was one of the most productive geniuses in history. He was so full of many ideas and didn’t have any efficient technology to test them out. Great engineers of the past had none of the resources\, such as CAD\, that we have today. So\, it begs the question\, what if Leonardo da Vinci used CAD software? \nIn this webinar\, Dr. Siddhpura will explore some of the capabilities of modern CAD software and how Leonardo da Vinci could have used these. \nThis is a must-attend event for engineering professionals and aspiring engineers alike. \nReserve your spot at this free webinar today! \nThe webinar will be recorded and will be sent out to registered attendees afterwards. A certificate of attendance can be provided to attendees who request it after the live webinar. \nPlease note: the time stated on this event is in Australian Western Standard Time (AWST).
