The World Economic Forum has conducted research which details which country produces the most engineering graduates. Unfortunately, the data they collected left China and India out of the equation due to a "lack of data". Due to the perplexing fact that they left the two countries out, InsiderMonkey.com conducted their own investigations to see which country has the most engineering graduates, factoring in the research done by the World Economic Forum

These were their findings:

The...

The latest results in the tissue engineering and biomaterial development field comes from the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering team that work out of Harvard University. Working with the Harvard John A. Paulson School for Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS), the teams have developed a new method of bioprinting "thick vascularized tissue constructs" with the help of 3-D printers.

The tissue constructs consist of human stem cells, "extracellular matrix, and circulatory...

Chemical engineers in the United Kingdom are researching methods of testing substances at a faster rate than previously conducted to determine whether or not they are regarded psychoactive substances, otherwise known as 'legal highs'.

'Legal highs' (NPS - novel psychoactive substances) refer to substances that stimulate the consumer to the same extent illegal psychoactive drugs do but are easier to purchase due to them being accessible to most people. The substances are not being controlled...

Tesla and SpaceX CEO, Elon Musk, is hosting a competition for engineering students or any engineers that are up to the challenge. Announced in January, Musk wants to see design ideas for 'The Hyperloop', a super-quick public transport alternative that should aim to travel at speeds of up to 760 miles per hour.

Enter the Auburn Hyperloop Team. The group of mechanical engineers walked away with two awards at the SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition Design Weekend. They won best overall...

The engineering industry is being influenced to become more attractive as a field of study to females, with hopes that the male dominated industry might look more equal in the near future.

ExxonMobil - the world's largest publicly traded international oil and gas company - is at the helm of this movement, establishing the Girls Engineering Festival that took place in the Independent School Districts of Conroe, Magnolia and Spring in the United States on the 23rd of...

A recent study by Deakin University (Melbourne, Australia) has shown that majority of engineering graduates actually end up working within the IT industry, rather than the Engineering Industry. Their findings were published in the Australasian Journal of Engineering Education.

The university analysed data on over 200,000 people who have a bachelor-level degree in engineering and found that the degree is extremely valuable to have across a wide range of industries. The study showed...

The Oxford Martin Programme on Technology and Employment, in association with Citi recently carried out the Technology at Work v2.0: The Future Is Not What It Used To Be report. The report highlights published data that was featured in the World Bank Development Report 2016.

It was found that fourty-seven percent (47%) of jobs in the U.S. are at risk of automation in the next two decades. The report goes into depth with statistics showing which cities have the highest (and lowest)...

The recently released National Employment Report by Aspiring Minds has announced that 80% of India’s engineering graduates are unemployable. The report was based on a study of more than 150,000 engineering graduates in 2015 who attended more than 650 different universities. This has highlighted India’s need to upgrade the country’s education and training system.

CTO of Aspiring Minds, Varun Aggarwal said "Engineering has become the de-facto graduate degree for a large chunk of students...

Descriptors for busy lives tend to suggest a sense of drowning; being ‘snowed under’ or ‘swamped’. The more positive expression of ‘having a full plate’, somehow struggles to adequately portray the complexity of modern living.

If it weren’t for the persistent need to professionally develop or bolster existing skills at a campus or training facility, the life juggling act could be simplified.

This education conundrum though, like all conundrums, has been solved – the solution is of...

Would-be students; graduating from school or requiring further education down the track, have commonly approached government-run vocational colleges for training solutions. A variety of reasons account for this. Traditionally government grants have been available and tuition costs heavily subsidised. There are also a large number of sizeable campuses and due to this the assumption exists that a broad range of courses are available and offered regularly. Another factor which has increased the...

Something almost every manager struggles with at some point in their career is motivating those they’re leading.  Everyone needs to be motivated.  Sometimes it’s encouraging a less engaged team member to be more engaged. Other times it is making sure your all-star performer doesn’t become complacent.

One of the biggest challenges a manager faces when motivating members on his team is knowing which techniques to use for each team member, which is...

I’ve worked in technology for twenty years, the past thirteen as a product manager. I’ve gained somewhat of a reputation for being effective at working with software engineers. This skill has earned me a place in history as one of the three greatest product managers of all time.[1] (On this exclusive list I am joined only by Steve Jobs and Niccolò Machiavelli.)

For years I’ve kept my secrets close to the vest. But no longer: today I will share with you my...

In my last post on when organizations care about careers, I talked about various things an organization can do in order to utilize their employees effectively and in the process, help employees realize their career goals.

However, not all companies care about careers, and when they don’t, individuals suffer. It is essential for everyone to be focused on their own career goals and manage the career proactively, with or without explicit support from the...

In this post, I would like to discuss about characteristics of high-performance teams as defined in The Wisdom of Teams. For more detailed review of the book that I wrote sometime back, see here: Part-I, Part-II and Part-III.

The book defines a team as follows (my formatting)

A small number of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common purpose, performance goals and working approach for which they hold themselves mutually...

Taking initiative is about picking up organizational challenges to solve without being asked and delivering results. Taking initiative is a well-known way to achieve stardom at workplace. A FastCompany article has this to say from the book How to Be a Star at Work: 9 Breakthrough Strategies You Need to Succeed:

For stars, initiative generally has four elements: It means doing something above and beyond your job description. It means helping other people...

In my last post, Product Manager, or Product Experience Manager, I described the disparate features and experiences that got broken in SiteZ and made the case that product management team should be responsible for overall product experience. In the final post of this series, I will present my views on how product management team should manage experience so that such issues can be minimized or avoided. Note that I am not talking about creating initial product...

In continuation with the previous article Commonly Misused Terms and Phrases, we can see few more in this article.
Affect / Effect
You are not alone if you commonly confuse “affect” and “effect.” These two terms were confused in print as early as 1494. The key to correct usage here is to determine whether the term is being used as a noun or verb, and to discern the intended meaning.
“Affect” is usually used as a verb. (I think of the “a” in “affect” standing for “active verb.”) To...

In continuation with the previous article Internship Report, there are few more important things that have to be concentrated while preparing an internship report. They are as follows:

  • Global Mechanics
  • Cover Page
  • Title
  • Abstract
  • Introduction
  • Section Headings
  • Conclusion
  • Acknowledgments

Internship Report
Typically, you are required to write a report about your work at the completion of an internship or co-op. Although an internship or co-op might not be linked directly to a class, per se, the act of writing the report—which is often achieved in the final weeks of the experience or in the semester following the work—is certainly a writing-intensive experience. The document provides a simple means for you to report to your faculty supervisor on both the content and value of...

Few people relish interviews, and it is easy to respond to them by being either overly nervous or even overly cocky. It is important, then, to prepare for an interview as you prepare for any test. Incredible resources are available to you, including websites where you can “practice” by choosing among various responses to tricky interview questions, your school’s Career Services staff, and technology that allows you to videotape yourself doing a mock interview. With all these resources, I’ll...

When I woke up this morning my girlfriend asked me, “Did you sleep good?” I said, “No, I made a few mistakes.”
—Steven Wright

This chapter is for everyone. We have all made the mistakes described herein. How many times have you found yourself puzzling over the distinction between “affect” and “effect,” “it’s” and “its”? It is not surprising that we maintain such uncertainties, because in any town in America you can find billboards and road signs and ads and newspapers with...
