Program Details

Overview

Civil and structural engineering is one of the oldest forms of engineering which involves the design, construction, and maintenance of the built environment. Civil engineers design for progress, to ensure a future of resilient and sustainable infrastructure that will meet the demands of our growing population. As a civil engineer you could be involved in sustainable urban development, environmental protection, conservation of energy and water resources, or even geotechnical, hydraulic or transport engineering.

With this in mind EIT has developed an intensive program which will prepare you for a rewarding and satisfying career. With this qualification you will have acquired the essential knowledge which underpins both this and other fields of engineering. More importantly, you will have become a civil and structural engineering technologist.

Time Commitment

Successful students are thus likely to spend approximately 20 hours per week in order to cover the material adequately and to gain sufficient knowledge in each unit. This includes the preparatory reading, attendance at each webinar and the time necessary to complete the assignments and laboratory work.

Pathway to the Bachelor of Science (BSc)

The pathway to the BSc (Eng.) is designed for students who qualify for credit from their preceding advanced diploma or equivalent studies and industry experience. The pathway will provide advanced diploma entrants with exemption for those units within the BSc curriculum that are technology orientated where it can be demonstrated that equivalent content and depth of study has already been completed in the advanced diploma program. This will only apply if the discipline stream chosen can be closely associated with the units taken in the advanced diploma stage.

It is anticipated that students with a relevant industrial career background (that is at an appropriate career level) would not need to complete the industrial experience, and may also gain credit for the associated Industrial Experience Research Project unit (unit code BSC109C). This credit would be gained only after formal assessment of the student’s career history and it is likely that these vocationally experienced students will need to deepen their academic knowledge and may need to deepen their professional engineering competencies. This is built into the program by three inclusions:

  1. Core units will extend academic knowledge in areas such as the more theoretical maths and engineering science that a vocational entrant may not have experienced;
  2. Where required, short bridging programs may be offered to overcome gaps in prior knowledge (delivered in sub-discipline units) that are identified when students apply for credit for prior learning;
  3. Students who have industrial experience that is identified as being at an inadequate standard would be required to complete the Industrial Experience Research Project unit. This would be determined case-by-case based on EIT’s Admissions Policy and the BSc Entry Requirements.

Industrial Experience

The BSc will include two short, well-defined periods of industrial experience in an engineering environment. It will also entail a hands-on workshop which will be used to verify your hands-on work skills. If you already have relevant experience you may apply to have credit granted by completing the associated recognition of prior learning form to demonstrate that your experience is of a sufficient nature and standard.

In addition to your recommended textbooks, there are a number of potential electronic resources available to you for your work during the program.  These include:

  • IEEE Xplore STEM45 Journal –unlimited full text access to 45 selected IEEE Journals
  • Elsevier Knovel® for Academia – a  cloud-based service that offers you 24x7 access to relevant and reliable technical information wherever you are.
  • Gale Academic Onefile – a database of abstract and full text articles from over 11,000 peer-reviewed journals, covering a variety of subjects in science, business and humanities.

Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements - Bachelor of Science (Civil and Structural Engineering)

Entry is available to applicants who hold:

  1. A Year 12 Australian Senior Certificate of Education (or equivalent for International Students), completed within the past 2 years, with the following level of achievement in Maths:
  • WA – WACE scaled score of 50.0 or more.
  • ACT – a scaled mark of 125 or more
  • NSW – performance Band 2 or above
  • QLD – a level of Sound Achievement (S) or above
  • SA/NT – a grade of C- or higher or a Subject achievement score of 10 or more
  • TAS – an award of Satisfactory Achievement or above
  • VIC – a study score of 25 or above

Applicants who have completed Yr 12 (or equivalent for International Students) more than 2 years ago will also need to show relevant work experience in the field of study applied for; OR

  1. A relevant (to the sub-discipline) Engineering AQF Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Associate Degree (or higher) with successful completion of all Maths units/modules; OR
  2. An overseas qualification equivalent to Point 2 above from a structured program of learning that leads to the full or partial achievement of an officially accredited qualification undertaken at a tertiary institution such as a university, government technical college, or government recognized private college (EIT assesses overseas qualifications using Australian Government guidelines to determine their comparability to qualifications); OR
  3. International Baccalaureate (IB) Completion with a minimum score of 24 including English and Maths completion; OR
  4. Foundation studies or bridging course completion in a relevant discipline with completion of Mathematics and English. e.g. Engineering enabling course; AND
  5. Satisfactory English language proficiency at an English pass level in an Australian Senior Certificate of Education (or equivalent for International Students); OR
  6. A specified level of achievement in a recognised English language test such as: IELTS  at a score of at least 6.0 (with no individual band score less than 5.5); or  (or equivalent) as outlined in the EIT Admissions Policy

Maths Bridging Test/Exam

Maths bridging test/exam (non-proctored/invigilated): to be completed by all Higher Education students (online and on-campus) during orientation week, to be administered through Moodle. If a student fails the initial test they must complete EIT’s 3 week bridging course (online) and then take the test again (non-proctored/invigilated). If the student fails again they will be considered a student at risk and managed in accordance with EIT’s Student at Risk Policy.

Recognition of Prior Learning and Exemptions

EIT can give you credit for units where you can demonstrate substantial prior experience or educational background. An assessment fee may apply. For more information, please see EIT's Credit and Recognition of Prior Learning Policy.

Program Structure

The course consists of a combination of core units, sub-discipline specific ‘stream’ units, industrial work experience and a final year project. The core units will provide you with an understanding of general engineering concepts including mathematics, chemistry, physics, mechanics, electrical circuits, programming, design, sustainability and professional practice. The specialized civil and structural engineering units will build on this knowledge, but focus on this particular civil and structural engineering stream, such as soil mechanics, structural design, steel and concrete structures, road design and more.

Practical Exercises and Remote Laboratories

The hardware equipment connected to most of the computers, both industrial and educational, allows you to perform real implementation of engineering activities by interfacing the computers, software and simulators to real-world hardware.
